The idea

The shell came with a double-height volume and very little else. The conversion adds a mezzanine for quiet work and leaves the lower floor as one open room, with the new stair standing free in the middle of it rather than pushed to a wall.

The volume

Keeping the full height on the entrance side was the whole point of the conversion, so the mezzanine covers only the back third of the plan. That leaves the front as a double-height room, which is what makes a 190 m² office feel like somewhere you would bring a client.

The stair

Free-standing, open-tread, with a single folded steel stringer. It is the only object in the room that is not furniture, and it was detailed to be looked at from underneath as much as walked on.
