The idea

The brief was more light and fewer rooms. Removing two non-structural walls turned three cellular spaces into one, and everything the flat needs to store now sits in a single joinery wall that runs the length of it.

One room

Both walls that came out were partitions, which made the structural side of this straightforward and the services side less so. Re-routing the kitchen drainage set the position of the island, and the rest of the plan followed from that one fixed point.

The storage wall

Everything the flat needs to put away is in one run of oak joinery, floor to ceiling, with no handles. It absorbs the wardrobe, the pantry, the utility cupboard and the study desk, and it is the reason the rest of the apartment can stay empty.
