The idea

The house was structurally sound and thermally hopeless. Rather than rebuild, the work replaced the entire west elevation with deep glazing and added a layer of sliding timber screens outside it — which is what turned the worst room in the house into the one everybody uses.

What stayed

The frame, the floor slabs and the roof structure are all original. Keeping them fixed the floor-to-ceiling height at something slightly under what we would have drawn from scratch, which is why the new glazing runs the full height available and the head detail is as thin as it is.

Everything else on the west side is new: insulation, glazing, external screens and the terrace they open onto.

The screens

Four sliding panels of vertical batten run on a single top track. Closed, they cut direct sun without cutting the view; open, they stack at the solid end of the elevation and disappear against the cladding. They are the only moving part of the renovation and the one the client operates daily.
